This is Tom Baker, British actor, who portrayed Doctor Who for seven years. He was the first Doctor I ever saw on television.
In 1975, somebody on WOR-tv got the bright idea to bring over some British television shows, all BBC probably, as I think that may have been the only network in England at the time, outside of the infamous ITV.
Anyway, I can't remember any of the other shows, but those of us who watched got a full five episodes of a Doctor Who story. Tom Baker was outrageous, inventive and his voice still rings in my ears.
This was new and fresh and wonderful for me...not Star Trek or Star Wars, but something one had to think about, and a language one had to interpret along the way. The sets were terribly cheesy, the Daleks were rolling boxes but menacing, and above it all strode the Doctor, munching Jelly Babies (I have since had some, they are delicious) and swinging a long colorful scarf.

I didn't know there had been other Doctors until PBS picked up the series.
I had seen a movie predating all of them, with Christopher Lee in the title role, I believe, but that was AGES ago and I might be mistaken. It did involve Daleks, however.

But this was new and cool and I'd missed seeing the adventures after PBS stopped showing them, until Paul McGann's movie and then when the Sci-fi channel picked up the new series with that Doctor I can't remember, the one with the ears and Rose.
And then the new, improved Doctor with David Tennant.

Sorry, Mom, I'm sure this bores you to tears, but my friend in Atlanta brought it up.
