This is Tom Baker, British actor, who portrayed Doctor Who for seven years. He was the first Doctor I ever saw on television.
In 1975, somebody on WOR-tv got the bright idea to bring over some British television shows, all BBC probably, as I think that may have been the only network in England at the time, outside of the infamous ITV.
Anyway, I can't remember any of the other shows, but those of us who watched got a full five episodes of a Doctor Who story. Tom Baker was outrageous, inventive and his voice still rings in my ears.
This was new and fresh and wonderful for me...not Star Trek or Star Wars, but something one had to think about, and a language one had to interpret along the way. The sets were terribly cheesy, the Daleks were rolling boxes but menacing, and above it all strode the Doctor, munching Jelly Babies (I have since had some, they are delicious) and swinging a long colorful scarf.
I didn't know there had been other Doctors until PBS picked up the series.
I had seen a movie predating all of them, with Christopher Lee in the title role, I believe, but that was AGES ago and I might be mistaken. It did involve Daleks, however.
But this was new and cool and I'd missed seeing the adventures after PBS stopped showing them, until Paul McGann's movie and then when the Sci-fi channel picked up the new series with that Doctor I can't remember, the one with the ears and Rose.
And then the new, improved Doctor with David Tennant.
Sorry, Mom, I'm sure this bores you to tears, but my friend in Atlanta brought it up.

That was Peter Cushing playing the good Doctor in two movies: Doctor Who and the Daleks and Daleks: Earth Invasion 2150. The selling point at the time for both films was that it was the first time the Daleks were shown "in colour".
And the Doctor with the ears is Christopher Eccleston. He'll be playing Destro in the new GI Joe movie opening in a few weeks.
(Do I know this friend in Atlanta?)
That would be Peter Cushing ;)
As for Tom Baker. He was great, but Patrick Troughton was the bestest best Doctor ever :P
They don't even look alike, but I can't remember which was who when.
Who, when?
My favorite Doctor was Jon Pertwee.
I looked up Peter Cushing and realized that he was the one I remembered as the Doctor in the movie I saw as a kid...and that Christopher Lee was the Man with the Golden Gun, but why can't I get these two actors straight in my head?
I'm losin' it, folks.
Totally losin' it.
hah
I've had so much fun watching all the doctors and villains since, up to the present. One day I'll go back to catch Cushing and Troughton, and the early movies I missed.
I do miss the days when Saturday night wasn't Saturday night without a Dr. Who episode and a Dalek shouting at the top of its "lungs." DOOOOOO NOT MOOOOOOOVE!!!! lol
or "teh sex"
or "teH SECHS" or whatever you prefer
the point is he is my favorite, but scarf boy and celery man are close seconds.
So then I tune into Dr. Who that next week, and Ecchelston (who I had a mad crush on) suddenly regenerates into... Tennant! And I shrieked in horror.
But then I calmed down, and gave Tennant a chance. And the guy totally grew on me as the Doctor. He really made that role his, and I'm not ready for him to be gone. :(
and dont forget him as Barty Crouch Jr, the poster boy for Evil!
Can't beat that in a Doctor. Every female viewer sighed....
